“He is by a Champion and Sire of Sires, out of a Breeders’ Cup winning Millionaire who is from a family of Champions. He’s going to be the last Group 1 Winning son of A.P. Indy to retire, best we can tell. We feel fortunate to have a piece of history with us, never mind of this caliber, available to the Mid-Atlantic.” Louis Merryman

Bred by Darley and raced by Godolphin Racing, LLC, Long River had four U.S. wins for Kiaran McLaughlin including a pair of stakes in the Evening Attire (107 Beyer) and Time For A Change, where he also finished third behind Grade 1 winner Tonalist in the Jockey Club Gold Cup [G1], His career also includes placings in the G3 Hagyard Fayette S and the G3 Exelsior S, defeating the likes of Grade 1 Winners Moreno, V.E. Day and Wicked Strong from 9 Graded starts stateside.

The Last Group/Graded Son of A.P. Indy To Retire To Stud

After being transferred to Dubai, it was here in April 2017 Long River took the G1 Al Maktoum Challenge R3 Sponsored by Emirites Arlines in gate to wire fashion, having finished second to La Bernardin in Round 1 of the G2 Al Maktoum Challenge previously that January. He trained on to make two more starts, including setting the early pace in Arrogate’s 2017 Dubai World Cup, before being retired from racing.  Long River retires with a record of 25-5-4-2, earnings of $770,347 and a high Equibase speed figure of 124.

“A rare Group 1 winner these days for the brilliant A.P. Indy, Long River is certainly bred for the job being out of G1 Breeders’ Cup Distaff and G1 Acorn S. winner Round Pond (Awesome Again) who came close to breaking the $2m prize-money barrier.” – Thoroughbred Daily News

Long River is out of the incomparable Round Pond, who earned $1,998,700 on the track, and took the 2005 Acorn (G1) and Fantasy (G2) before she earned her 5 1/2-length G1 Breeders’ Cup Distaff victory in 2006. Round Pond was sold to Darley in 2007 as a broodmare prospect for a then-record of $5.75 million. She has also produced Holland Park (Tapit) who broke his maiden early this year followed by a runner-up finish in the Frederico Tessio S at Laurel in April. Round Pond is out of the Trempolino mare Gift Of Dance, who is a half-sister to influential sires and Highweight Champions Black Minnaloushe and Pennekamp.
